Word Resume Templates: Built-In Options
To find Word's free templates: open Word, click File > New, and search "resume." You'll see a range of designs, from basic to colorful.
Watch out for:
- Tables and text boxes that shift when you add a line
- Sidebars and columns that some ATS read out of order
- Placeholder text that's easy to miss
For a deeper look at the built-in templates, see Microsoft Word resume templates.
Resume Template Word Free Download vs. CVMark
Word templates: free to download, fully offline, but you handle every alignment and spacing fix yourself.
CVMark: free to build and preview online, with formatting handled for you and AI help with the writing. Export to Word (.docx) when an employer or recruiter asks for an editable file, or download a PDF for most applications.
If you're formatting in Word yourself:
- Margins: Layout > Margins > Custom, 0.5–1 inch
- Font: Calibri, Arial, or Garamond at 10–12 pt
- Dates: use a right-aligned tab stop, not spaces
- Headings: use Styles so they stay consistent
- Save: File > Save As > PDF for applications

Word or PDF: Which Should You Send?
Send a PDF unless the employer asks for Word. PDFs keep your formatting exactly as designed. Send Word (.docx) when a recruiter or staffing agency needs to edit it, or an application system only accepts Word. Keep both versions ready. See resume PDF or Word.
