Google Resume Templates: What's Built In
Open Google Docs, click Template gallery, and scroll to Resumes. You'll find five free Google resume templates: Swiss, Serif, Coral, Spearmint, and Modern Writer.
They're a fast way to get started, but they have limits:
- Only five designs, so many applicants end up with the same look.
- Some layouts use tables or side columns, which some applicant tracking systems read out of order.
- No writing help. You start from placeholder text.
If you want to stick with Google Docs, Swiss and Serif are the safest picks for ATS. Our step-by-step guide on how to make a resume in Google Docs walks through each one.
How to Use a CVMark Template in Google Docs
- Build your resume in CVMark. Pick a template above, then fill it in or upload your existing resume.
- Polish it. Use the live preview and the AI coach to tighten bullets and your summary.
- Download it as a Word (.docx) file.
- Upload it to Google Drive, then right-click the file and choose Open with > Google Docs.
- Keep editing in Docs, and download it as a PDF when you're ready to apply (File > Download > PDF).
Some spacing may shift slightly when Google Docs converts a Word file, so give it a quick check before you send it.
Is a Google Docs Resume Template ATS-Friendly?
It can be. What matters is the layout, not the app. A resume passes ATS more reliably when it has:
- One column, read top to bottom
- Standard headings like Experience, Education, and Skills
- Real text, not text inside images, tables, or text boxes
- A text-based PDF, not a scan
Every CVMark template uses real, selectable text and standard headings. For the most ATS-safe option, choose the Professional template. See ATS-friendly resume templates for a full checklist.
Google Docs Resume Template Free vs. a Resume Builder
Use a free Google Docs resume template if you're comfortable formatting everything yourself, want to share a link with a mentor for comments, and only need one simple version.
Use a resume builder if you want help with the writing, need to tailor your resume for different jobs, or want to check your ATS score before applying.
You don't have to choose: build in CVMark, then move the file into Google Docs for final tweaks or sharing.
- Set File > Page setup to Pages (not Pageless) so you can see page breaks.
- Use 0.5–1 inch margins and a font like Arial, Lato, or Georgia at 10–12 pt.
- Line up dates on the right with a right-aligned tab stop instead of spaces.
- Share links as Viewer, never Editor.
- Keep it to one page if you have less than 10 years of experience.
