Resume work experience section

How to Write the Work Experience Section

Your work experience section is where most hiring decisions are made. List jobs in reverse-chronological order with your title, company, location, and dates, then three to five bullets per role that start with action verbs and show results with numbers. Use present tense for your current job and past tense for previous ones. Writing a resume with no work experience? Use internships, projects, volunteering, and activities the same way. How to Format Work Experience on a Resume

For each role, include:

  • Job title
  • Company name and location (or "Remote")
  • Dates (month and year, e.g. "Jan 2023 – Present")
  • Three to five bullets for recent roles, one to three for older ones

List jobs newest first. If you held several roles at one company, group them under one company heading. See multiple positions at the same company.

How to Write Work Experience Bullets

Use the formula action verb + what you did + result:

  • Weak: Responsible for the company blog.
  • Strong: Wrote 40+ blog posts that grew organic traffic 120% in a year.

Use present tense for your current job and past tense for previous ones. See past or present tense on a resume and accomplishments for your resume.

How Many Years of Experience Should Be on a Resume?

Usually the last 10–15 years. Older roles can be cut, or condensed into a single line like "Earlier roles: Sales Associate, Key Holder (2008–2012)." Recent graduates should include internships and part-time jobs from college. See how far back should a resume go.

How to Make a Resume With No Work Experience

No paid jobs yet? Replace the work experience section with whatever shows your skills:

  • Internships and job shadowing
  • Class projects and capstones
  • Volunteer work
  • Clubs, sports, and leadership roles
  • Freelance or gig work, babysitting, tutoring, pet sitting

Describe each like a job: role, organization, dates, and results. Put education first, and add an objective naming the job you want. Full guide: how to write a resume with no experience.
