How to List Education on a Resume (+ Builder)

Here's how to list education on a resume: write your degree, major, school, location, and graduation year (or "Expected" date if you're still studying). Add GPA only if it's 3.5 or higher, plus honors and relevant coursework if you're early in your career. Students and recent grads put education near the top; experienced professionals put it after work experience. Copy an example below, then drop it straight into the CVMark builder.

What to Include in Your Resume Education Section

  • Degree and major (spell it out, or use a common abbreviation like BS or MBA)
  • School name and location
  • Graduation date, or "Expected [Month Year]"
  • GPA, if it's 3.5 or higher (optional)
  • Honors and awards: Dean's List, cum laude, scholarships
  • Relevant coursework, if you're a student or career changer
  • Minor or concentration, if it's relevant

See how to list a degree on a resume for examples by degree type.

Where to Put Education on a Resume

  • Students and recent graduates: right after your summary, before experience
  • Career changers with new, relevant education: near the top
  • Experienced professionals: after work experience, kept short

Once you have a few years of relevant experience, you can drop GPA and coursework entirely.

Relevant Coursework on a Resume

List three to six courses that match the job, on one line:

Relevant coursework: Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance, Econometrics, Business Statistics

Use course names, not course numbers. More in relevant coursework on a resume.

Education Resume Examples for Special Cases

  • Degree in progress: use "Expected May 2027." Never list a date alone, which implies you've graduated.
  • Unfinished degree: show years attended or credits completed. See unfinished degree on resume.
  • Minor: add it after your major. See how to list a minor.
  • Certifications: list them in a separate Certifications section. See certifications on a resume.
  • High school: include it only if it's your highest level of education.
