Architect Resume Samples (2026): 3 Templates for Every Career Stage

Quick answer: The best architect resume samples lead with licensure status (or progress toward it), a short summary naming your project types and core software, then reverse-chronological experience with project scale, budget, and phase in every bullet. Add education, credentials like LEED, a grouped software list, and a link to your portfolio. Keep it to one or two pages.

Architects can explain a whole building in a few drawings, then write a resume that says "Responsible for design." Below are three architect resume samples you can copy (graduate, project architect, and senior), plus a section-by-section guide to fill them in.

What Hiring Firms Look for in an Architecture Resume

Firms usually scan for four things before opening your portfolio:

  • Where you are on the licensure path. Licensed, testing, logging experience hours, or just graduated?
  • What you have worked on. Building types (healthcare, residential, mixed-use), scale, and which design phases you handled.
  • Software fluency. Revit and AutoCAD are the usual baseline; SketchUp, Rhino, Enscape, and Adobe tools are common extras.
  • Whether you can be trusted with clients, consultants, and contractors. Coordination is half the job.

Your resume answers those questions in words. Your portfolio answers them in pictures. You need both.

Architect Resume Sample #1: Architecture Graduate / Entry-Level

ELENA MORALES
Architecture Graduate | Portland, OR | elena.morales@email.com | (555) 201-7781
Portfolio: elenamorales.design | LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/elenamorales

SUMMARY
Recent M.Arch graduate with studio focus on mass timber and adaptive reuse. Experienced in Revit, Rhino, and Enscape, with an internship producing construction document sets for a 40-unit multifamily project. Currently documenting experience hours toward licensure.

EXPERIENCE
Architectural Intern | Cedar & Line Architects | Summer 2025

  • Produced Revit sheets and details for the construction document set of a 40-unit, 4-story multifamily building.
  • Built and updated 3D models for weekly client meetings, turning design comments into revised options within 48 hours.
  • Assisted with a code review of egress and accessibility requirements under the project architect's supervision.

ACADEMIC PROJECTS
Thesis: Library Annex in Cross-Laminated Timber | University of Oregon

  • Designed a 22,000 sq ft public library addition, testing daylight and energy performance with simulation tools.
  • Selected for the school's end-of-year exhibition.

EDUCATION
Master of Architecture (NAAB-accredited) | University of Oregon | 2026
B.A. Architecture | University of Oregon | 2024

SOFTWARE
Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino + Grasshopper, SketchUp, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator

LICENSURE
Architectural Experience Program (AXP): in progress

Why it works: Studio work is presented like real project experience (size, material, outcome). The licensure line tells the firm exactly where Elena is, without overstating it.

Architect Resume Sample #2: Project Architect (Mid-Level)

DAVID OKAFOR, AIA
Licensed Architect (Illinois) | LEED AP BD+C | Chicago, IL | d.okafor@email.com | davidokafor.com

SUMMARY
Project architect with 8 years of experience in healthcare and higher-education buildings from schematic design through construction administration. Leads consultant coordination and CD production in Revit, with a reputation for clean, buildable drawing sets.

EXPERIENCE
Project Architect | Northbank Design Group | 2021 – Present

  • Led documentation and CA for a $38M, 90,000 sq ft outpatient clinic, coordinating structural, MEP, and civil consultants.
  • Managed a team of 4 designers through design development and CDs, delivering every milestone set on schedule.
  • Resolved 200+ RFIs and submittals during construction, keeping change orders well under the owner's contingency.
  • Introduced a shared Revit detail library that reduced repeat drafting across the healthcare studio.

Architectural Designer | Ridgeway Partners | 2018 – 2021

  • Developed schematic and DD packages for 3 university residence halls totaling 1,100 beds.
  • Prepared presentation renderings and physical models for client and planning commission reviews.

EDUCATION
Bachelor of Architecture | Illinois Institute of Technology | 2018

SKILLS
Software: Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite
Practice: Construction documents, construction administration, code analysis, consultant coordination, specifications

Why it works: Every bullet carries scale, money, or phase. "Led documentation for a $38M clinic" tells a principal far more than "worked on healthcare projects."

Architect Resume Sample #3: Senior Architect / Design Lead

SARAH CHEN, AIA, NCARB
Senior Architect | Boston, MA | sarah.chen@email.com | sarahchen.studio

SUMMARY
Licensed architect with 15 years of experience leading mixed-use and residential projects from client pursuit to occupancy. Combines design leadership with fee and schedule management, and mentors emerging professionals through licensure.

EXPERIENCE
Senior Associate | Harborline Architects | 2019 – Present

  • Design lead for a 320-unit mixed-use development, guiding the project through zoning approvals and community meetings.
  • Manages project fees and staffing for a portfolio of 5 concurrent projects.
  • Co-wrote 3 winning proposals and presented at shortlist interviews.
  • Mentors 6 designers, 3 of whom completed their licensure exams during the mentorship.

Project Architect | Studio Fenwick | 2011 – 2019

  • Led residential and adaptive reuse projects ranging from single-family homes to a 60-unit historic mill conversion.

EDUCATION & CREDENTIALS
Master of Architecture | Harvard Graduate School of Design | 2010
Licensed Architect, Massachusetts | NCARB Certificate | LEED AP

Why it works: At senior level, the resume shifts from "what I drew" to what I led, won, and grew: approvals, fees, proposals, people.

How to Write Each Section of an Architect Resume

Header and licensure line

Put your name, location, email, phone, and portfolio link at the top. If you are licensed, add it right under your name, including the state and any credentials (AIA, NCARB Certificate, LEED AP).

(Switches to serious face.) Be careful with the word "architect." The title is regulated by state law, and states differ. For example, a Massachusetts Board advisory says "architect," "registered architect," and "architectural designer" are reserved for licensed persons there, while people enrolled in NCARB's experience program may use "Intern-Architect." Check your state board's rules before choosing a headline. Elsewhere, unlicensed candidates often use titles like "Architectural Designer" or "Designer," but verify that this is allowed where you work.

If you are on the path, say so plainly: "AXP in progress" or "ARE in progress, 4 divisions passed." NCARB describes the path to licensure as education, experience, and examination, so firms understand those milestones instantly.

Summary

Two or three sentences: your title, years of experience, building types, the phases you are strongest in, and one differentiator. See our guide on how to write a resume summary for formulas.

Experience

Use reverse-chronological order. For each project-heavy bullet, try to include:

  • Building type and scale (square footage, units, beds, stories)
  • Budget (construction cost, if you are allowed to share it)
  • Phase (SD, DD, CD, CA, or pursuit)
  • Your role (led, coordinated, produced, presented)
  • Outcome (on schedule, approved, awarded, certified)

Strong action verbs for architecture resumes: designed, detailed, coordinated, documented, presented, resolved, led. For more ideas, see synonyms for developed on a resume.

Skills and software

Group them so they are scannable:

  • Design and documentation: Revit, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Grasshopper
  • Visualization: Enscape, Lumion, V-Ray, Twinmotion, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign
  • Coordination: Navisworks, Bluebeam, BIM 360 or Autodesk Construction Cloud
  • Practice skills: building codes, accessibility standards, specifications, construction administration, sustainable design, client presentations

List only what you can use on day one; some firms test Revit skills in interviews.

Education and certifications

List degree, school, and year. Note when a program is NAAB-accredited if you are early-career. Certifications such as LEED AP, WELL AP, or Passive House training belong here too. Our guide on certifications on a resume covers formatting.

Your Resume and Portfolio: How They Work Together

Almost every architecture firm will want to see a portfolio, and many will not seriously consider a resume without one. Treat them as a set:

  • The resume is the index. It lists projects, roles, and results.
  • The portfolio is the evidence. It shows drawings, renderings, and process.
  • Use the same project names in both so a reviewer can jump from a resume bullet straight to the right pages.
  • Send a short sample portfolio first. A compact PDF with your strongest handful of projects, sized small enough to email, then bring the full version to the interview.
  • State your role on every portfolio project, especially team projects.

The resume itself should stay clean and text-based. Save the beautiful layouts for the portfolio, where they belong. A two-column resume with your own floor-plan-inspired grid looks great until an applicant tracking system reads it like a toddler reads a blueprint. Our creative resume examples post covers when a designed resume is a good idea.

Common Architect Resume Mistakes

  • Listing software with no context. Show what you built with Revit, not just that you opened it.
  • Using "responsible for" everywhere. Replace duties with outcomes (see resume bullet points that turn duties into results).
  • Hiding licensure status. If a firm has to hunt for it, they may assume the answer is "no."
  • No portfolio link. Or a link to a portfolio last updated during your second-year studio.
  • Ignoring the job description. A healthcare-focused firm wants your healthcare projects up top. Tailor your bullets and keywords; our resume keywords optimization guide explains how.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an architect resume be?

One page is ideal for students, graduates, and early-career designers. Experienced project architects and senior architects can use two pages if every line describes relevant projects or leadership. Your portfolio carries the visual detail, so the resume does not need to.

Should I include a portfolio with my architecture resume?

Yes. Firms evaluate design and documentation skills through your portfolio, so include a link in your resume header and attach a short sample portfolio when the application allows it. Keep the file size reasonable so it does not bounce from email inboxes.

Can I call myself an architect on my resume if I'm not licensed?

Usually not. Use of the title is regulated by state law, and some states restrict related titles too. Check your state licensing board's rules, use a title the board allows, and list your licensure progress (such as AXP or ARE in progress) separately.

What software should I put on an architecture resume?

Revit and AutoCAD appear in most architecture job postings, with SketchUp, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, and rendering tools like Enscape or Lumion also common. Match your list to the firm's tools in the job description, and only include programs you can use confidently.

What should an architecture student put on a resume?

Lead with education, studio and thesis projects, internships, and software skills. Describe academic projects with building type, size, and design goals, and mention competitions, exhibitions, or awards. Relevant coursework (structures, building systems, sustainable design) can fill space early on.

Is there a good architect resume template?

Use a simple, single-column template with clear headings: header, summary, experience, education, software, and licensure. The architect resume samples above work as templates; swap in your own projects and numbers.
