Resume Keywords: Optimization for Humans, Not Bots

Keywords matter, but not for the reason you think. You aren't unlocking a secret level; you are simply speaking the same language as the employer.

Do not list generic traits like "Hard worker," "Communication," "Attention to Detail." but be specific.

How to Use Keywords Properly

  1. Don't Stuff: "Python Python Python" doesn't help.
  2. Contextualize: "Used Python to automate weekly reporting, saving 10 hours per week."
  3. Translate Transferable Skills:
    • Bad: "Led weekly meetings." (Internal jargon)
    • Good: "Resolved high-priority operational issues across 12 markets." (Universal business language)

Searchability

Recruiters do use key terms to search their database. If they need "SQL," they will type "SQL" into the search bar. If you only wrote "Database Management," you might be missed. Fix: Ensure the specific hard skills and tools mentioned in the job description appear at least once in your resume, preferably in your Skills Section or Work Experience.

Pro Tip: Your resume is not a timeline of your life. It is a sales pitch. Only include the keywords that sell you for this specific job.
